System architecture and product development
This is the longer kind of work. I join a team as system architect and stay until the product is in production.
Most of the job is making the decisions that are expensive to change later. How the system is split into modules. Which LEDs, optics and drivers to use. How it is assembled and tested, and what it will cost to build. I also do a fair amount of the detailed work myself: optical design, LED selection, test setups and prototypes.
Example: NXTLED at Hortilux Schréder
Hortilux needed greenhouse toplights in a wide range of spectra and power levels, built in the Netherlands at a reasonable cost. A large part of my work was LED selection and performance analysis: finding LED combinations that meet the required spectra without adding more than needed. The other part was an architecture that fits the production method, so that assembly stays quick and repeatable. The result is one modular platform from which many variants are built on the same line.
